In short: While many know the Florida Keys for their turquoise waters, Islamorada holds a unique cultural weight. It served as the 45-year home of baseball icon Ted Williams, who transformed the village into a destination for high-profile fishing trips and celebrity guests.

In the mid-20th century, Islamorada became synonymous with the legacy of Ted Williams. Beginning in 1943, the legendary baseball player resided on the island, where he spent over four decades establishing himself as a renowned fisherman. His presence was so significant that he became the village's most well-known resident, frequently hosting celebrities and leading them on local fishing excursions.

The village's geography plays a vital role in this reputation. Because it lies between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, Islamorada occupies major pathways for big fish migrating. This unique position earned it the informal title of the "Sportfishing Capital of the World." Local navigators often utilize the nearby Hawk Channel to navigate around the powerful currents of the Gulf Stream.

The community's history is also marked by resilience. In 1935, the village was struck directly by the Labor Day Hurricane, a catastrophic event that caused 423 deaths. Today, a memorial at Overseas Highway mile marker 82 preserves the ashes of over 300 victims, serving as a somber reminder of the area's vulnerability to the elements.

The 'Village of Islands' was established on 31 December 1997 and comprises five separate landmasses: Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, and Tea Table Key. The village maintains a tropical savanna climate and a population that grew from 6,119 in 2010 to 7,107 by the 2020 census.
