In short: Founded in 1900, Isotta Fraschini evolved from an importer of French vehicles into a creator of elite automobiles favored by early Hollywood stars. After surviving wars and economic collapse, the brand has reinvented itself as a specialized industrial engine manufacturer and a competitive force in international endurance racing.

Established in Milan on January 27, 1900, the company began as a venture by Cesare Isotta and three siblings: Vincenzo, Antonio, and Oreste Fraschini. Initially focused on importing Mors and Renault vehicles, the firm shifted to independent production by 1904. They quickly gained a reputation for technical innovation, becoming early adopters of four-wheel braking systems, overhead camshafts, and the straight-eight engine configuration. By the 1920s, the brand had achieved status as a premier luxury marque, with its deluxe limousines becoming symbols of wealth for the North American aristocracy and icons of popular culture, appearing in films like Sunset Boulevard and novels such as Tender is the Night.

The Great Depression and the Second World War severely hampered the company's automotive operations. Production dwindled, with the final model, the Tipo 8C Monterosa, seeing a limited run of only three to six units. The original firm entered liquidation in 1949, though the name persisted. In 1955, it merged with Breda Motori to form F.A. Isotta Fraschini e Motori Breda. This entity transitioned into industrial manufacturing, eventually establishing a diesel engine factory in Bari during the 1960s. Today, operating as Isotta Fraschini Motori S.p.A. under the Fincantieri group, the company focuses on industrial engines and fuel cell technology.

The automotive brand saw several revival attempts, including a failed effort in the late 1990s by Giuliano Malvino. A more successful resurrection occurred in 2022 with the establishment of Isotta Fraschini Milano Fabbrica Automobili s.r.l. Led by a team including Alessandro Fassina and Claudio Berro, the new organization entered the FIA World Endurance Championship. Their Tipo 6 LMH Competizione made its debut in 2024, marking a return to the track for a nameplate that once defined the pinnacle of pre-war luxury motoring.
