In short: Born from the restructuring of ATV in 1982, Central Television became a powerhouse of British broadcasting. From its iconic, UFO-inspired globe logo to its pioneering digital newsrooms, the station dominated the English Midlands for decades, eventually becoming the most successful ITV company before being absorbed into the national ITV plc.

Central Independent Television launched on 1 January 1982, replacing the criticized ATV franchise. The Independent Broadcasting Authority mandated a dual-region structure, forcing the new company to serve both the East and West Midlands. This transition was initially hampered by industrial disputes, delaying the Nottingham-based East Midlands service until September 1983. Despite these early operational hurdles, the station rapidly expanded its influence, producing major network entertainment and drama while establishing international subsidiaries like Zenith Productions, which famously adapted the Inspector Morse novels.

The station’s visual identity became as famous as its programming. Its original logo, a sphere resembling a moon or eclipse, was famously described by critics as a UFO hovering over the Midlands. By 1985, this evolved into a complex, computer-animated symbol nicknamed 'The Cake' or 'The Aspirin,' which featured twelve segments and a vibrant color spectrum. Between 1985 and 1997, the presentation team created over 10,000 unique sequences, giving the channel a broader range of on-air branding than any other British station of the time.

Financial success followed this creative output. By April 1993, Central reported advertising revenues of £250 million and programme sales of £83.4 million, cementing its status as the most successful ITV company. However, the industry landscape shifted as consolidation took hold. Carlton Communications acquired a stake in 1987 and bought the company outright for £750 million in 1994. Following the 2004 merger of Carlton and Granada, the regional identity was gradually phased out. By 2006, the Central brand was largely retired, and the legal entity, ITV Central Ltd, eventually became dormant and was dissolved in 2026.
