In short: Western intelligence first identified China's J-XX program in 1997, marking the start of a long-term effort to develop fifth-generation fighter aircraft. What began as preliminary design studies eventually split into competing projects between Chengdu and Shenyang, ultimately reshaping the landscape of modern aerial warfare and stealth technology in the Pacific.

The J-XX program was a broad designation used by Western intelligence agencies to track China's pursuit of fifth-generation fighter technology. Preliminary design studies emerged in 1997, and by 2002, the People's Liberation Army Air Force had officially unveiled the program. Early development saw a competition between the Chengdu Aerospace Corporation and the Shenyang Aerospace Corporation, with various designs incorporating features like s-shaped air inlets, trapezoidal wings, and faceted surfaces to minimize radar signatures.

In 2008, the military endorsed Chengdu's Project 718, which became the J-20 stealth fighter. This aircraft conducted its first flight in January 2011 and entered service in 2017. Shenyang, having lost the primary bid, pivoted to develop the FC-31, an export-oriented fighter that eventually evolved into the J-35 for the Chinese Navy. These developments were closely monitored by international observers, with U.S. officials frequently adjusting their estimates regarding the scale and timeline of China's stealth capabilities.

The scope of Chinese aerospace development has since expanded beyond the original J-XX scope. By 2019, designers were already discussing pre-research for sixth-generation aircraft, targeting a 2035 timeframe. Recent activity in late 2024 has seen the emergence of new prototypes, including a potential trijet flying-wing design from Chengdu and a smaller, cranked-arrow configuration from Shenyang. These advancements, alongside the development of the JH-XX tactical bomber, reflect a rapid maturation of China's domestic aviation industry and its strategic focus on long-range strike and stealth capabilities.
