How the son of El Chapo forced the Mexican government to surrender in 2019
In short: Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, a leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, commands a vast drug trafficking empire. His influence was famously demonstrated during the 2019 Battle of Culiacán, where his forces engaged in city-wide gun battles to secure the release of his brother, Ovidio Guzmán López, from Mexican authorities.
Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar and his three brothers, collectively known as the Chapitos, inherited their father Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera’s extensive drug trafficking networks. Since 2008, the brothers have consolidated control over this faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, coordinating the smuggling of massive quantities of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and marijuana into the United States. Their operations are characterized by a reliance on violence, including the bribery of public officials, kidnappings, and murders to protect their distribution chains.
The group’s reach and willingness to use force were starkly illustrated during the “Battle of Culiacán” on October 17, 2019. After Mexican authorities apprehended Ovidio Guzmán López, hundreds of cartel gunmen flooded the streets of Culiacán, Sinaloa. They engaged in intense gun battles and established fiery roadblocks throughout the city, resulting in loss of life. The overwhelming show of force successfully compelled the Mexican government to release Ovidio Guzmán López to prevent further violence.
Today, Guzmán Salazar remains a high-priority target for United States law enforcement. A federal arrest warrant was issued in the Northern District of Illinois on April 6, 2023, charging him with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, running a continuing criminal enterprise, and money laundering. He is considered armed and dangerous, and the U.S. State Department has posted a $10,000,000 reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.
