In short: Ismael Zambada García, known as El Mayo, spent decades as a ghost, evading capture while orchestrating a massive international drug trafficking empire. After avoiding arrest for his entire career, a deceptive lure in 2024 finally brought the elusive kingpin into U.S. custody, ending his long reign over the Sinaloa Cartel.

Born in 1950, Ismael Zambada García became a central figure in the Mexican drug trade following the 1989 arrest of Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo. As the Sinaloa Cartel fractured from the larger organization, Zambada emerged as a key leader alongside figures like Joaquín Guzmán Loera, or El Chapo. For decades, Zambada operated with remarkable longevity, utilizing sophisticated logistics—including aircraft, submarines, and tunnels—to move multi-ton quantities of cocaine and heroin into major U.S. cities. His influence spanned across several Mexican states, including Sinaloa, Durango, and Sonora, while maintaining independent ties to Colombian suppliers.

Zambada’s ability to operate freely was bolstered by a vast network of corruption. Testimony from his son, Vicente Zambada Niebla, revealed that his father maintained a monthly bribery budget of up to $1 million to influence high-level Mexican public officials. This systemic corruption allowed the cartel to function with minimal interference for years. Even as the Mexican government launched major offensives against drug networks in 2006, Zambada managed to expand his territory, eventually assuming full command of the Sinaloa Cartel following El Chapo’s capture in 2016.

The end of his evasion came on 25 July 2024, when he was arrested in El Paso, Texas, after being lured by Guzmán López under the false pretense of a property deal. Following his arrest, Zambada faced a series of legal proceedings in a Brooklyn federal court. By August 2025, he pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy and running a continuing criminal enterprise, issuing an apology for the harm caused by his actions. On 20 July 2026, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, marking the definitive conclusion to the career of one of Mexico’s most powerful and enduring drug lords.
