In short: The Iver Huitfeldt-class isn't just a ship; it is a masterclass in industrial efficiency. By reusing existing hulls and components, Denmark created an air defense powerhouse that has since been exported as a design license to nations across the globe.

The Royal Danish Navy entered the Iver Huitfeldt-class into service between 2012 and 2013. To keep costs low, the ships were built using the basic hull design of the older Absalon-class frigates. This strategy was bolstered by constructing blocks in Estonia and Lithuania before assembly at the Odense Steel Shipyard. Furthermore, most weapons were repurposed from previous Niels Juel-class corvettes and Flyvefisken-class patrol vessels to minimize expenditure.

Technologically, these ships are designed for air defense using a StanFlex modular mission payload system. They feature two primary radar systems: the SMART-L L-band radar for long-range surveillance and the APAR I-band radar for precise tracking. The APAR is particularly sophisticated, utilizing Interrupted Continuous Wave Illumination (ICWI) to guide up to 32 semi-active radar homing missiles simultaneously. While primarily equipped with ESSM and SM-2 IIIA missiles, they also have the potential to carry Tomahawk cruise missiles.

The class's influence extends far beyond Danish waters. Its design served as the basis for the 'Arrowhead 140' design selected by the UK's Royal Navy for its Type 31 frigate program in 2019. Additionally, Indonesia signed a contract in September 2021 to purchase a license based on this design to build two frigates locally. However, despite its success, the class faced operational hurdles; in March 2024, the lead ship experienced weapon guidance errors and radar locks during a Red Sea operation, leading to reports of potential role-downgrades by 2025.
