How Jalen Hurts redefined the modern NFL quarterback through historic rushing and passing versatility
In short: Jalen Hurts transformed from a questioned NFL prospect into a Super Bowl MVP and the highest-paid player in league history. By shattering rushing records and mastering the short-yardage game, he redefined the dual-threat quarterback, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to consistent playoff success and a championship victory in Super Bowl LIX.
Born in 1998, Jalen Hurts began his journey in Channelview, Texas, where he excelled as a four-star recruit. His collegiate career was defined by resilience; after leading Alabama to consecutive national championship appearances, he transferred to Oklahoma for his final season. This move proved pivotal, as he transitioned from a player with uncertain professional prospects to a high-level NFL draft pick, eventually being selected 53rd overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2020.
Hurts’ professional ascent was marked by his unique ability to impact the game on the ground. He became the first quarterback in NFL history to record three consecutive seasons with at least 10 rushing touchdowns. His physical style, often utilized in the team's signature short-yardage play known as the Tush Push, helped him break Cam Newton’s single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in 2023. By 2025, his evolution as a passer was equally evident, as he achieved his first career game with a perfect passer rating of 158.3 against the Minnesota Vikings.
The pinnacle of his career arrived with the 2024 season, culminating in a 40–22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX. Named Super Bowl MVP, Hurts became the third Black quarterback to earn the honor. This achievement followed a historic 2023 contract extension worth $255 million, which briefly made him the highest-paid player in NFL history and included the first no-trade clause in Eagles franchise history. His trajectory from a benched college starter to a Super Bowl champion remains one of the most compelling narratives in modern football.
