In short: James A. Garfield rose from a childhood of poverty in a log cabin to the highest office in the nation. His path included working on the Ohio and Erie Canal, serving as a Civil War general, and eventually winning the presidency through a unique front porch campaign in 1880.

Born in 1831 in Orange, Ohio, James A. Garfield was the last American president to begin life in a log cabin. Following his father's death in 1833, he was raised by his mother in difficult financial circumstances. As a youth, he sought adventure as a sailor but instead spent six weeks managing the mules that pulled boats along the Ohio and Erie Canal. This period was marked by hardship; he fell into the water approximately 16 times and contracted malaria.

Garfield’s academic drive eventually led him to Williams College, from which he graduated in 1856. He transitioned from a career in education—serving as president of the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute—to law and politics. During the Civil War, he proved his leadership as a colonel of the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and later as a major general, distinguishing himself at the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863. He subsequently spent nine terms representing Ohio in the House of Representatives, where he gained a reputation as a fiscal expert.

His nomination at the 1880 Republican National Convention was unexpected. As a delegate, he had been managing another candidate's campaign, but his eloquent oratory captured the attention of the assembly. He was selected as a compromise candidate on the 36th ballot. During the general election, he pioneered the front porch campaign, speaking to visitors from his home in Mentor, Ohio. Despite a narrow popular vote victory over Winwin Scott Hancock, his presidency was tragically cut short when he was shot by an assassin in July 1881, leading to his death that September.
