In short: Jerrod Johnson’s path to the sidelines wasn't a straight line. After setting school records at Texas A&M and navigating a nomadic professional career across six different NFL teams, he pivoted to coaching. Now, he is credited with helping mold one of the league's brightest new stars.

Johnson’s collegiate tenure at Texas A&M was defined by high-volume production and versatility. From 2008 to 2010, he served as the starting quarterback, eventually setting the school record for career passing yards with 8,011 and total offense with 8,888. His journey wasn't always glamorous; in 2006, he was redshirted and even spent a brief stint on the basketball team before committing fully to football. By 2009, he led the Big 12 in touchdown passes and earned Second-team All-Big 12 honors.

The transition to the professional ranks proved volatile. Despite being an elite collegiate producer, Johnson faced significant hurdles as a pro. He spent six seasons moving between the Eagles, Steelers, Seahawks, Bears, Ravens, and Cowboys. His time in the NFL was marked by short stints and practice squad assignments, including a notable period where he played for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL after the Hartford Colonials folded unexpectedly.

Johnson found his second act through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship, joining the 49ers in 2017. This path led him to the Houston Texans in 2023, where he served as quarterbacks coach under DeMeco Ryans. In this role, Johnson was instrumental in developing rookie C.J. Stroud, who won NFL Rookie of the Year in 2023. His career illustrates a shift from being the face of an offense to becoming the strategist behind it.

Following his success with the Texans—who reached the Wild Card Round and won the AFC South title in 2023—Johnson departed the team in early 2026. He returned to the Philadelphia Eagles, the first organization that signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2011, marking a full-circle moment in his professional journey.
