From Division II quarterback to the architect of major college football programs
In short: James Franklin’s journey through the ranks of American football is a study in rapid ascent. After setting seven school records as a player, he climbed from coaching wide receivers in Pennsylvania to leading powerhouse programs like Vanderbilt and Penn State, navigating both historic winning streaks and intense institutional scrutiny.
Born in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, in 1972, Franklin’s coaching trajectory began in 1995 at Kutztown University. His early career was marked by diverse roles, including serving as an offensive coordinator for the Roskilde Kings in Denmark and coaching at various US institutions like Washington State and Idaho State. At Idaho State, he oversaw a statistically significant season where the team ranked ninth nationally in total offense. Before his coaching career took flight, he earned a psychology degree from East Stroudsburg University. During his playing years there, he was recognized as a Division II player of the year nominee.
Franklin’s tenure at Vanderbilt (2011–2013) was defined by unprecedented success for the program. He led the Commodores to consecutive bowl games, a feat never before achieved in the school's history. His 2012 season was particularly notable, featuring a nine-win campaign, a 7-game winning streak, and the program's first top-25 ranking since 1948. However, his time there also involved significant controversy regarding player misconduct and allegations surrounding his handling of related digital evidence. During his time at Vanderbilt, he also served as the recruiting coordinator, focusing his efforts on talent in Maryland and Washington, D.C. He notably achieved the program's highest total of 25 wins over just three years.
In 2014, Franklin transitioned to Penn State, a move that required intense vetting by university administrators due to the ongoing fallout from the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Since then, he has navigated the highs of Big Ten Championship victories and Rose Bowl triumphs, as well as the lows of a 0–5 start during the 2020 pandemic-shortened season. His commitment to the program was solidified by a massive 10-year, $75 million extension, securing his position as head coach through the 2031 season. His contract includes various performance-based incentives, such as bonuses for winning a national title or the Big Ten Championship. Despite facing challenges like the loss of star players to the NFL, he led the team to a Rose Bowl victory over Utah.
