From North Yorkshire farm life to Michelin-starred kitchens and television fame
In short: Born into a farming family on the Castle Howard estate, James Martin transformed a childhood interest in cuisine into a massive media career. From training in France to hosting major BBC and ITV series, his journey spans high-end gastronomy, pilot licenses, and the complexities of life in the culinary spotlight.
James Martin's culinary foundation began in North Yorkshire, where his family were farmers on the Castle Howard estate. This early exposure to food led him to train at Hostellerie De Plaisance in Saint-Émilion, France, before he moved to the three Michelin Star restaurant Maison Troisgros in Roanne. After returning to the UK, he served as a Pastry Chef at the Chewton Glen Hotel in the South of England for two years.
His television career launched in 1996 with programs like Yorkshire's Finest and Ready Steady Cook. He became a household name as the presenter of BBC's Saturday Kitchen from 2006 until 2016. Despite achieving great acclaim—notably securing the Fortnum & Mason Awards' TV Personality of the Year title in both 2015 and 2021—his professional journey has faced certain disputes. In 2009, he faced criticism for a motoring column in The Mail on Sunday regarding his driving near cyclists, and more recently, in 2023, reports surfaced regarding his behavior toward production staff, to which Martin responded that he had been suffering from facial cancer during a previous incident in 2018.
Beyond the screen, Martin has expanded into diverse ventures, including opening The Leeds Kitchen in 2011 and a Michelin-starred restaurant at the Talbot Hotel in Malton in 2012. He also holds a private pilot license and a helicopter pilot qualification. His influence extends to various commercial branches, including bakeries located at Stansted and Glasgow airports, as well as Manchester Piccadilly Railway Station.
