From Huddersfield to Hollywood, James Mason was a master of the brooding anti-hero.
In short: An English stage actor who conquered British cinema before becoming a Hollywood staple, James Mason navigated a complex life of high-stakes melodrama and unexpected preservation. Beyond his three Oscar nominations, he was a dedicated cinephile who famously rescued lost Buster Keaton films from the brink of total destruction.
Born in 1909 in Huddersfield, James Mason initially pursued architecture at Cambridge before drifting into acting. Without formal training, he rose to prominence in the 1940s through Gainsborough melodramas, becoming Britain's top box-office attraction by 1944. His career spanned decades, shifting from the tyrannical guardian in The Seventh Veil to the suave spy in North by Northwest and the corrupt lawyer in The Verdict.
Mason’s life was marked by both professional triumphs and personal turbulence. His 1964 divorce from actress Pamela Mason was dubbed America's first million-dollar settlement, a landmark case that elevated his lawyer, Marvin Mitchelson, to celebrity status. Despite his fame, Mason remained a quiet intellectual, narrating documentaries on silent cinema and recording literary works by authors like Wilde and Browning.
His legacy extends to film preservation; in 1952, he purchased a home formerly owned by Buster Keaton, where he discovered and saved rare nitrate reels of lost works like The Boat. Following his death in 1984 from a heart attack in Switzerland, his final resting place became a point of contention between his children and his second wife, Clarissa Kaye, who had bequeathed his ashes to a religious leader.
Today, Mason’s remains lie near his friend Charlie Chaplin in Corsier-sur-Vevey. His headstone reflects a sentiment shared by Senator Ted Kennedy, urging those who mourn him to focus on gratitude for his presence rather than sorrow for his absence. His career remains a testament to a versatile performer who transitioned seamlessly from quota quickies to international stardom.
