In short: For nine years, Jamshedpur FC stood as a unique pillar of the Indian Super League. Boasting its own stadium and a historic league title, the club's journey from a 2017 expansion success to a sudden 2026 withdrawal reveals the harsh financial realities of modern professional football.

Founded in June 2017, JamsHDpur FC was a cornerstone of the Indian Super League (ISL) expansion. Managed by Tata Steel, the club was notable for being the only team in the top flight to possess its own training facilities and a self-owned stadium, the JRD Tata Sports Complex, often called "The Furnace." The club's identity was deeply rooted in its local heritage, featuring tribal symbols on its crest to honor Jharkhand's history. Its home ground, the JRD Tata Sports Complex, was originally constructed in 1991.

The club's history was marked by significant peaks and valleys. While early seasons saw them finishing 5th, the 2021–22 campaign was a historic triumph. Under manager Owen Coyle, the club secured the ISL League Winners' Shield, becoming only the third club to achieve the feat after FC Goa and Mumbai City FC. The squad's early years featured high-profile names like Tim Cahill and the club's first-ever draft pick, Anas Edathodika. This period of success was punctuated by the 2021–22 League Shield victory.

However, the club's era in the ISL ended abruptly at the start of the 2026–27 season. Following a failure to pay a ₹5.5 million league participation fee by the July 31 deadline, the club withdrew from the competition. Internal communications suggested the existing business model was "structurally financially unviable." The decision to exit the league came as a shock to players like captain Pronay Halder. This followed the club's inability to meet the first installment of the new commercial structure's fees.

In August 2026, Tata Steel transferred 100% ownership of Jamshedpur Football & Sporting Private Limited to Churchill Brothers FC for a token consideration of just ₹100. While the ISL sporting licence moved to the new owners, Tata Steel committed to maintaining the club's legacy through grassroots initiatives and the Tata Football Academy. The transition to Churchill Brothers FC included the takeover of twelve players and two coaches. This agreement was finalized in mid-August 2026.
