The first club to break the ceiling of Indian football
In short: Punjab FC didn't just join the elite; they paved the way. As the first team to ever win promotion into the Indian Super League, they transformed from an I-League underdog into a top-flight mainstay, fueled by a rapid rebranding and a massive grassroots expansion.
The club's journey to the top flight began in earnest in April 2020, when Roundglass Sports Pvt. Ltd. acquired Minerva Punjab. Rebranded as Roundglass Punjab FC, the club underwent a period of rapid evolution. Under the leadership of head coach Staikos Vergetis, the team secured the 2022–23 I-League title after a 4–0 victory against Rajasthan United on March 4, 2023. This achievement marked a historic milestone, making them the first club to ever earn promotion into the Indian Super League (ISL).
Transitioning to the premier tier required a shift in identity and infrastructure. In July 2023, the club officially simplified its name to Punjab FC. While they previously played at the 12,000-capacity Tau Devi Lal Stadium, the club moved its home operations to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi for the 2023–24 season. This move coincided with a period of firsts: Luka Majcen scored the club's first-ever ISL goal in September 2023, and Madih Talal netted the first home win in December 2023.
Beyond the professional results, the club is built on a massive structural foundation. It operates 15 grassroots football centers across Punjab, with a strategic plan to expand to 25 by the end of 2025. This commitment to development is mirrored in their academy, which received 'elite category' accreditation from the All India Football Federation in December 2023. By integrating the Minerva Academy and establishing a reserve side that won the 2024 Reliance Foundation Development League, Punjab FC is positioning itself as a long-term pillar of Indian football.
The club's competitive trajectory has been steady. After a 24-point finish in their debut ISL season, they secured 28 points in the 2024–25 regular season. Their recent form includes a notable 3–0 Super Cup victory over the previous season's runners-up, Odisha, on April 22, 2024, reaching the quarter-finals.
