From the Kalahari to the Premiership: The rise of a powerhouse forward
In short: Jasper Wiese didn't just join Leicester Tigers; he arrived with a physical presence that drew immediate comparisons to rugby legends. His journey from South African schoolboy standout to Man of the Match in England highlights a steady climb through elite provincial and university systems.
Born in Upington, Wiese established himself as a prolific scorer early in his development. During the 2011 Grant Khomo Week, he finished joint-third in try-scoring charts after netting three tries across three matches. He repeated this feat at the Under-18 Craven Week in 2012, where he scored a hat-trick against Border Country Districts. These early performances served as a springboard for his move to Bloemfontein to join the Free State Cheetahs academy and CUT Ixias university team.
His transition to senior rugby was marked by versatility and high output. While playing for the Free State U19 team in 2014, he scored nine tries—finishing second only to Jurie Linde in his group. By 2015, despite missing out on the Under-20 national training squad, he demonstrated adaptability by shifting from number eight to flanker for the Free State U21 side. This period was crucial for honing his 'powerful carrying' style before making his senior class debut in April 2016 with the Free State XV.
Wiese's move to England in 2020 saw him make an immediate impact at Leicester Tigers, debuting just four days after joining the club. His rapid ascent was cemented by a Man of the Match performance against Bath in January 2021 and a subsequent victory in the 2022 Premiership final. After representing South Africa as a Springbok in 2021 and during the 2023 World Cup, Wiese moved to Japan in July 2024 to join Urayasu D-Rocks in the Rugby League One competition.
