In short: Before they were ten-time champions, the predecessors of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors faced bankruptcy and dissolution. From the financial struggles of the 1990s to a period of unprecedented continental dominance, the story of this club is a masterclass in corporate takeover and sporting resurgence.

The club's lineage is a complex saga of financial instability. Originally founded in January 1993 as the Wansan Pumas, the team failed to secure enough funding and went bankrupt before even joining the K League. A local alcohol producer, Bobae Ltd., stepped in to save the side, which eventually joined the league in 1994 as Chonbuk Buffalo. However, financial difficulties led to the club's dissolution following the 1994 season. It was only in December 1994, driven by the momentum of South Korea's 2002 FIFA World Cup campaign, that Hyundai Motors took over the Buffaloes' players to form Chonbuk Dinos, the precursor to the modern Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

The club's golden era was defined by immense corporate backing and tactical precision. Under manager Choi Kang-hee, who arrived in July 2005, the club transformed from a mid-table side into a powerhouse. This period saw them secure two AFC Champions League titles, in 2006 and 2016, and a historic run of five consecutive K League titles between 2017 and 2021. This dominance was supported by significant investment, including the 2013 completion of the Yulsori Clubhouse, a state-of-the-art training facility in Wanju County modeled after elite European clubs.

Success has not been without controversy or decline. In 2016, despite winning the AFC Champions League, the club faced a nine-point deduction and a fine following allegations of bribing referees. After a period of decline that saw the club finish as low as tenth in 2024, a resurgence arrived in 2025. Led by Uruguayan manager Gus Poyet, the club secured its tenth K League title and a domestic double, proving that even after periods of instability, the dynasty could be rebuilt.
