In short: Joe Piscopo rose to fame as a standout performer during a turbulent era for Saturday Night Live. Known for his impressions and physical comedy, he transitioned from Hollywood film roles and bodybuilding to a career in radio broadcasting and political commentary, remaining a fixture in his home state of New Jersey.

Born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1951, Joe Piscopo developed an early reputation for subverting scripts during his time in high school drama. After graduating from Jones College in 1969, he eventually landed a contract with Saturday Night Live in 1980. This was a period of significant upheaval for the program, as the entire original writing and production staff had departed. Amidst a new cast that struggled to find critical favor, Piscopo and Eddie Murphy emerged as the only two performers retained when Dick Ebersol took control of the show in 1981.

Piscopo’s tenure on the show, which lasted until 1984, was defined by his impressions, most notably of Frank Sinatra. He even collaborated with Sinatra’s own lyricist, Sammy Cahn, to refine his sketches. Beyond the screen, Piscopo pursued diverse interests, including a serious commitment to bodybuilding that saw him grace the cover of Muscle & Fitness magazine in 1988 and 1990. His film career included roles in Johnny Dangerously and Wise Guys, though he faced personal challenges, including a thyroid cancer diagnosis in 1990.

In later years, Piscopo shifted his focus toward radio and political engagement. Since 2014, he has hosted a morning show on 970AM The Answer, and in 2020, he began hosting a Sinatra-themed program on WABC. His political interests grew following his support for Donald Trump in 2016, leading him to briefly consider a gubernatorial run in New Jersey in 2017. Though he ultimately decided against the campaign, he has remained an active voice in conservative media and public events, solidifying his status as a notable figure in New Jersey culture.
