The drummer who was hired after a literal walk-out
In short: Imagine walking into a rehearsal, playing half a song, and having the frontman storm out of the room only to return with your job. This is how Joey Castillo joined Queens of the Stone Age—a move that launched a decade of stoner rock history.
Castillo's entry into one of the most influential rock bands of the 2000s was purely serendipitous. Josh Homme allegedly exited the space during a final practice, then reappeared to announce, "I just fired the drummer." Castillo accepted the immediate offer and served as the group's core for a decade, aiding on major releases such as Lullabies to Paralyze (2005), Era Vulgaris (2007), and 50% of ...Like Clockwork (2013).
Castillo established an eclectic career spanning heavy metal and punk prior to this success. He spent nearly a decade as the primary constant member for Danzig starting in 1994, performing on three studio albums including Blackacidevil (1996) and I Luciferi (2002). His career is marked by high-profile pivots; he turned down offers from Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies to join Danzig, and later navigated roles with groups ranging from the hardcore Circle Jerks to the heavy metal legends Zakk Sabbath.
Technically, Castillo is noted for his specific sonic signatures. He is famous for using the LP Jam block, which notably opens the single "Little Sister." His gear evolution reflects a meticulous approach to tone: he transitioned from DW drums and Paiste cymbals during the early 2000s to Tama Star Maple drums and Zildjian cymbals by 2018. Even his kit configuration shifted dramatically between tours, such as moving to larger toms and a smaller bass drum for the Era Vulgaris tour (2007–2008) to achieve specific percussive textures.
Beyond live performance, Castillo has appeared in surreal cultural moments, including a 2017 appearance as "The Nine Inch Nails" in an episode of Twin Peaks: The Return. Today, he remains a prolific session and touring musician, balancing roles in multiple active bands like DOOM Regulator and The Bronx.
