A Missouri school built to discover the latent power of every child
In short: Founded in 1923 to meet a growing demand for private education, John Burroughs School has evolved from an 18-acre site into a premier college-preparatory institution. Its philosophy rejects the idea of students as mere vessels to be filled, focusing instead on nurturing the living, growing potential within every individual.
The school's origins date back to 1922, when a group of St. Louisans identified a critical need for more country day schools to accommodate students who could not be accepted by existing institutions. Edna Fischel Gellhorn, who co-founded the League of Women Voters, headed the original campaign. An 18-acre lot situated on a Clayton streetcar line was bought for $18,000, about $340,000 today. The initial construction of the campus buildings, including a gymnasium, required an investment of $180,000. Classes officially commenced on 2 October 1923, just before the formal cornerstone-laying ceremony.
The school's founding philosophy was rooted in the conviction that each child possesses latent possibilities of power. Instead of treating a student's mind like a filled cistern or a written tablet, the school partners with parents to inspire and guide this developing entity. This approach seeks to help students make a contribution to the improvement of human society in adulthood. This educational mission was furthered by the school's participation in the Eight-Year Study during the 1930s. This experiment examined how progressive secondary schools could prepare students for college by removing certain curricular restrictions.
Since its establishment, the school has grown into a 49-acre campus in Ladue, Missouri. As of 2020, the faculty included 96 full-time and 32 part-time members. The institution has also been a training ground for notable figures, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and actress Ellie Kemper, among many others. The school's athletic legacy includes multiple state championships for the Bombers football team. Furthermore, the institution has produced several distinguished alumni, such as Grammy-winning musician John Hartford and former US ambassador Edward N. Ney.
