In short: A prolific striker for Norway and clubs like Valencia and Aston Villa, John Carew has since traded the football field for the film set. His journey from professional football to acting reveals a remarkable versatility that few athletes ever achieve.

Born in 1979, John Carew established himself as a formidable striker, known for a combination of strength and goal-scoring ability. His professional football career was expansive, spanning clubs in Norway, Spain, Italy, Turkey, France, and England. Notably, he was the first Black player to represent the Norway national team, earning 91 caps and scoring 24 goals. He began his professional journey with Lørenskog before moving to Vålerenga in 1997. During that time, he helped his team secure promotion to the Tippeligaen and win the Norwegian Football Cup.

Carew's club career included a high-profile stint at Valencia, where he won the La Liga title in 2002 and reached the 2001 UEFA Champions League Final. He later moved to Aston Villa in 2007 in an exchange deal for Milan Baroš. During the 2007–08 season, Carew proved his value by becoming the club's top scorer, netting 13 goals. His time in Spain also included a crucial goal against Arsenal during a Champions League quarter-final. Later, he spent a season on loan at the Italian club Roma.

Following his retirement from football in 2013, Carew transitioned into acting. He has since appeared in various productions, including the Canadian horror film Dead of Winter in 2014 and the Disney film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in 2019. His versatility is further demonstrated by his role as an early Spotify investor in the 2023 series The Playlist. His filmography also includes the Norwegian-made thriller Høvdinger, which was released in 2015.

While his footballing career was defined by physical presence and scoring prowess, his acting career has allowed him to explore diverse characters, from an aging footballer in the Norwegian series Heimebane to a character in Netflix's Home for Christmas. In the series Heimebane, he portrayed Michael Ellingsen, an older star for a local club.
