In short: Before he was a record-breaking Premier League star, Nigel Martyn was a midfielder working in a plastics factory. His journey from amateur Cornish football to the heights of the England national squad began with an unexpected discovery by a football club's tea lady.

Nigel Martyn’s ascent to professional football is one of the sport's most improbable trajectories. Originally a midfielder, the Cornishman transitioned to goalkeeping at age 17 for his brother's works team. During his time employed by a coal merchant and at a plastics plant, he competed in amateur football with teams including St Blazey, Bugle, and Heavy Transport FC. His professional breakthrough occurred in 1987 at Bristol Rovers, reportedly after being spotted by the club's tea lady, Vi Harris, while she was on holiday.

Martyn soon became a figure of immense financial significance in the English game. In 1989, his transfer to Crystal Palace made him the first goalkeeper in British football to command a £1 million fee. He continued to shatter records when he moved to Leeds United in 1996 for £2.25 million. His era at Leeds was marked by high-stakes European drama, including a man-of-the-match performance against Roma in the 1999–2000 UEFA Cup and helping the squad eliminate giants like Barcelona and Lazio during their Champions League campaign.

Despite the high-profile transfers, Martyn's career was defined by consistency and resilience. He earned 23 England caps between 1992 and 2002, serving as a vital squad member for the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups. Even at age 38, he remained a standout performer for Everton, helping them secure a fourth-place Premier League finish in 2004–05. His professional career ended in 2006 due to a persistent ankle stress fracture, but his legacy remains; he was voted into Crystal Palace's Centenary XI and recognized by Leeds supporters as their greatest ever goalkeeper.
