From shock-humor YouTube creator to chart-topping R&B artist
In short: Before he was a mainstay on the Billboard charts, George Miller was a viral sensation known for extreme comedy and shock humor. Discover how the creator of the Filthy Frank web series transitioned from internet memes to a sophisticated musical career defined by melancholic, lo-fi R&B.
George Kusun and Miller, known professionally as Joji, began his digital presence with the creation of the Filthy Frank Show in 2011. Operating through channels like DizastaMusic and TVFilthyFrank, Miller utilized shock humor and characters like Pink Guy to achieve massive virality. His influence extended to global internet culture, notably through the 2013 Harlem Shake craze, which propelled Baauer's song to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. His early content featured diverse segments, ranging from unconventional cooking tutorials to comedic Japanese language lessons. These videos were hosted on various platforms, including the TooDamnFilthy channel, which amassed hundreds of millions of views.
The transition from internet personality to serious musician was not merely a change in branding, but a necessity driven by health and personal growth. In late 2017, Miller retired his comedic personas, citing a desire for personal evolution and significant health concerns, including throat damage and a neurological disorder that causes stress-induced seizures. He sought to move away from the 'anti-vlogger' persona to create music that reflected his true self. This shift was accompanied by the release of his first book, Francis of the Filloy, which summarized his comedic era. He also moved away from the Pink Guy identity, which had previously released studio albums like Pink Season.
Under the name Joji, Miller has found significant commercial success, signing with 88rising and 12Tone Music Group. His discography, including albums such as Ballads 1 (2018), Nectar (2020), and Smithereens (2022), features a blend of trip-hop, R&B, and lo-fi elements. His 2022 single 'Glimpse of Us' became a major milestone, peaking at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching the top of the ARIA Charts, proving his ability to command the global mainstream stage. His recent work includes the 2026 album Piss in the Wind, released under his own label, Palace Creek. He is also preparing for the international Solaris Tour, a massive 41-show trek across several continents.
