From Hamburg's Altona district to Bundesliga champion with Bayer Leverkusen
In short: Rising through the ranks of local clubs like Altona 93, Jonathan Tah has evolved into a premier centre-back. His journey from a youth prospect in Hamburg to a Bundesliga title winner and Bayern Munich star highlights a remarkable ascent through German football's elite tiers.
Raised in Altona, Hamburg, Jonathan Tah was born to a German mother and an Ivorian father. After developing his skills at local clubs Altona 93 and SC Concordia, he was recruited by Hamburger SV. His professional rise was marked by early debuts in 2013, including a Bundesliga appearance against Werder Bremen in September of that year. He made his professional debut in a DFB-Pokal fixture against SV Schott Jena. This followed his early training within the local Hamburg football scene.
A significant turning point occurred on 15 July 2015, when Tah signed a five-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen for €7.5 million. A key part of Leverkusen's defensive line, he reached his 100th Bundesliga match for the side on 10 March 2019. His success culminated in the 2023–24 season, where he helped Leverkusen secure their first-ever Bundesliga title, clinching the championship with a victory over Werder Bremen on 14 April 2024.
Tah's individual accolades reflect his defensive dominance, earning him spots in the Bundesliga Team of the Season for the 2023–24, 2024–25, and 2025–26 seasons. Following his success at Leverkusen, he joined Bayern Munich on 29 May 2025, signing a contract through 30 June 2029. His international career has been equally notable, including a call-up to the Germany senior squad in March 2016 and participation in the 2024 UEFA Euro and the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His international journey included a debut for Germany against England. He also represented his country during the 2024 UEFA Euro tournament.
