In short: When Napoleon’s troops invaded Portugal in 1807, Prince Regent John faced an impossible choice. To avoid surrender, he orchestrated a massive, chaotic transatlantic exodus to Brazil, abandoning his capital in a rainstorm and transforming a fleeing court into the foundation of a new nation.

John VI’s reign was defined by the turbulent era of the Napoleonic Wars. As the son of Queen Maria I, John had already been acting as prince regent since 1799 due to his mother's mental illness. His position was precarious; he was caught between the competing interests of Great Britain, France, and Spain. While he attempted to maintain a fragile neutrality, the pressure from Napoleon’s Continental System eventually made peace with France impossible, forcing him to seek British protection.

The departure from Lisbon in November 1807 was a moment of profound historical upheaval. Under the escort of a British squadron, the royal family and a massive entourage embarked for Brazil. The scale of this migration remains a subject of historical debate. While 19th-century accounts suggested up to 30,000 emigrants, modern estimates suggest the number of passengers likely fell between 4,000 and 7,000, plus their crews. The voyage was far from regal; the fifteen-ship squadron was overcrowded, plagued by head lice, and endured ten days of being becalmed in scorching equatorial heat.

Despite the chaos of his flight and the political instability caused by his wife Carlota Joaquina’s conspiracies, John’s legacy is complex. While he lost Brazil to his son Pedro’s independence movement, he is credited by many historians as a mastermind of the modern Brazilian state for establishing the institutions that enabled its autonomy. Though once caricatured as a hesitant ruler, recent scholarship has rehabilitated his reputation, viewing him as a clever diplomat capable of balancing the competing interests of a global empire.
