The strategist who helped build the New England Patriots dynasty
In short: From a personnel assistant to an AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year, Josh McDaniels has navigated the highest levels of professional football. His career is defined by championship rings, high-stakes coaching controversies, and a complex relationship with the New England Patriots organization.
Josh McDaniels' career is deeply intertwined with the New England Patriots, where he has served as offensive coordinator for 14 non-consecutive seasons. During his first tenure from 2006 to 2008, the team achieved a perfect 16–0 regular season in 2007 and set a record for points scored. His second stint, spanning 2012 to 2021, saw the team secure three Super Bowl titles, including victories in Super Bowls XLIX and LI. He initially joined the franchise in 2001 as a personnel assistant. During his first stint, he also served as a defensive coaching assistant.
Despite his success, McDaniels' journey has faced significant hurdles. Between 2009 and 2010, his time leading the Denver Broncos involved an NFL inquiry and a disputed trade for quarterback Jay Cutler. The investigation centered on a video director who recorded a San Francisco 49ers walkthrough in London; while the NFL found no competitive advantage was gained, McDaniels was fined $50,000 for failing to immediately report the incident. This controversy occurred during a Week 8 match held at Wembley Stadium. The incident led to the dismissal of the team's video operations director.
McDaniels has also held head coaching roles for the Las Vegas Raiders from 2022 to 2023. His time in Las Vegas was characterized by struggles to maintain leads, resulting in a 6–11 record in his first season. His tenure in Nevada was marked by criticism regarding the team's inability to protect early leads. This period concluded with the departure of quarterback Derek Carr.
