In short: Hidden in plain sight at a private terminal in Las Vegas, an unmarked fleet of aircraft transports personnel to some of the nation's most secure sites. Known informally as "Janet," this highly classified airline serves as a bridge between civilian life and the deepest secrets of the Department of Defense.

Operating since 1972, Janet Airlines is an employee shuttle for the United States Department of the Air Force. It transports military personnel, Department of Defense civilians, and contractors to Special Access Program Facilities (SAPF) in southern Nevada, most notably the Nevada Test and Training Range, which includes Area 51 and the Tonopah Test Range. While the aircraft are generally unmarked, they are distinguished by a horizontal red cheatline along the windows.

The fleet's history is rooted in secrecy. The earliest flights were operated by defense contractor EG&G to support nuclear weapons development at the Nevada Test Site. Over decades, the fleet evolved from a single Douglas DC-6B to Boeing 737-200s in the 1980s, and eventually to six Boeing 737-600s acquired from Air China starting in 2008. To maintain its clandestine nature, Janet uses a blocked ICAO three-letter designator (WWW) for flight numbers and specific codes like TKM, which is not an official airport identifier but likely refers to Area 51.

The name "Janet" itself is shrouded in mystery. One theory suggests it was the call sign assigned by CIA officer Richard Sampson in the late 1960s, naming the flights after his wife. Others propose acronyms like "Just Another Non-Existent Terminal." Today, the service is operated by infrastructure and defense contractor Amentum. Despite its high profile in conspiracy lore, Janet remains a functional logistical necessity, moving up to 190 flights per week to keep secure facilities operational.

The airline's operations are so restricted that even job openings for flight attendants require a Single Scope Background Investigation to obtain security clearances. This level of vetting ensures that while the aircraft may be visible in the Nevada skies, the cargo and passengers remain shielded from public scrutiny.
