Why this Egyptian governorate was once named after a king
In short: Located in the northern Nile Delta, Kafr El Sheikh is a region defined by its agricultural prowess and ancient history. Though it now bears a name meaning the village of the chief, its identity has shifted through revolutionary politics, royal honors, and a deep connection to the land.
Established in 1949, the governorate was originally christened Fuadiyah to honor King Fuad I of Egypt. However, the political landscape shifted dramatically following the 1952 Revolution. With the monarchy abolished, the region shed its royal title in 1955, adopting the name of its capital city, Kafr El Sheikh, which translates to the village of the chief. Before its formal creation as a distinct governorate, the territory was part of the Gharbia Governorate.
The region is a cornerstone of Egypt's agricultural output, holding the top national position for the cultivation of long-staple cotton intended for export. Beyond its fields, the area is an industrial hub featuring cotton-processing factories, rice production, and one of the largest sugar plants in the region. This economic activity supports a population that remains predominantly rural; as of 2023, only 23.1% of its estimated 3.76 million residents lived in urban environments.
History runs deep here, as the governorate encompasses the ancient region of Bashmur. It is home to significant archaeological sites, including the ruins of Buto, the former capital of Lower Egypt, located at present-day Tell El Faraain. Modern development also continues, evidenced by international collaborations like the 2016 Swiss-funded solid waste management program and the diverse academic offerings at Kafr El Sheikh University, which spans faculties from medicine to engineering. The area has produced notable figures, including Nobel laureate Ahmed Zewail and former Prime Minister Saad Zaghloul.
