In short: One of the world's most versatile cruise missiles is designed to be modular, capable of launching from ships, submarines, and even aircraft. Its most deceptive capability lies in its ability to be disguised as ordinary commercial cargo, allowing it to be transported on trucks, trains, or merchant vessels.

The Kalibr (or 3M14/3M54) is a Russian-developed cruise missile family that first entered service in 1994. It is a modular system, meaning it shares common components across different platforms while utilizing specific hardware for its unique launch requirements. For example, while a submarine-launched version uses a conventional booster, the surface-launched variant utilizes a booster with thrust vectoring capabilities. The air-launched version is even more distinct, detaching from a specialized container as it is released.

The system's versatility is exemplified by the Club-K complex. This modification allows the missile to be placed in standard 20-foot or 40-foot sea containers. First advertised in 2010 and shown at the 2011 MAKS air show, this variant can be mounted on diverse platforms, including shorelines, rail platforms, and trucks. This ability to blend into global logistics chains makes it a significant tool for both conventional and land-attack operations.

In recent years, the Kalibr has become a central component of Russian military strategy. During the Syrian Civil War, it was used extensively for strikes against targets in Idlib and Aleppo. Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, it has been used to target energy infrastructure and command centers. While official range estimates vary significantly—ranging from 1,400 km to 2,500 km depending on the warhead type—the missile remains a primary tool for long-range precision strikes from the Black Sea.

The missile's global reach is confirmed by its export variants, known as 'Club.' These are utilized by the navies of Algeria, India, Vietnam, and China. These international contracts, combined with domestic production for the Russian Navy's Kilo, Lada, and Yasen-class submarines, highlight the Kalibr's role as a cornerstone of modern maritime and land-attack capabilities.
