In short: Kamindu Mendis has redefined batting efficiency, becoming the fastest Asian player to reach 1,000 Test runs. Beyond his historic scoring rate, he is a rare ambidextrous bowler, famously becoming the first player in Indian Premier League history to switch his bowling arm mid-over to dismantle an opponent's batting rhythm.

Born in 1998, Kamindu Mendis began developing his unique ambidextrous bowling style at age 13 while playing for Richmond College in Galle. This dual-handed capability reached the global stage during the 2025 Indian Premier League, where, playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, he made history by switching from left-arm orthodox spin to right-arm off-spin within a single over to dismiss Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

Mendis’s rise in Test cricket has been statistically unprecedented. In March 2024, he became the first batter to score twin centuries in a single Test while batting at number seven or lower. His total of 266 runs in that match remains the second-highest tally for a player at that position, trailing only Don Bradman’s 1937 record. By the time he reached his 1,000th Test run in September 2024, he had achieved the milestone in just 13 innings, tying with Bradman as the third-fastest player in history to do so.

His consistency is equally remarkable. Mendis holds the distinction of being the first player to record a score of fifty or more in each of his first eight Test matches. Following his performance against New Zealand in Galle, his career Test average stood at 91.27, the second-highest in history for any player with over 1,000 runs, surpassed only by Bradman’s 99.94. These achievements earned him the 2024 ICC Men's Emerging Cricketer of the Year award and multiple Player of the Month honors.

While his batting dominance defines his current trajectory, Mendis remains a versatile asset across all formats. From his international debut in 2018 to his role as a local star player in the 2026 Lanka Premier League, he has consistently adapted to the demands of T20, ODI, and Test environments. Whether through his match-winning partnerships or his defensive contributions in the field, Mendis has established himself as a central figure in Sri Lankan cricket.
