From a trainee with no lessons to a solo chart-topper
In short: Imagine training for over two years without a single dance or singing lesson due to your company's financial instability. Kang Daniel defied these odds, evolving from an ostracized child into a K-pop powerhouse who eventually took control of his own career and business.
Kang Daniel’s journey began in Busan, where he was often ostracized in elementary school due to his appearance. He found a sanctuary in dance, joining a b-boy club in eighth grade after a teacher's suggestion. This passion led him to the Nataraja Academy and eventually to Peniel Arts High School. Despite facing significant financial hurdles—including high tuition costs for his mother while she was unwell—he pursued modern dance and won a gold medal at the 49th High School Performing Arts Contest before ultimately receiving a GED.
His professional path was marked by systemic instability. While training under B2M Entertainment and later MMO Entertainment, he received no formal vocal or dance coaching because both companies lacked the funds. He spent two years and one month in this state of self-taught development before appearing as a backup dancer on 'Her Secret Weapon.' His breakthrough came in 2017 as the first-place winner of the reality series Produce 101, leading to his role as the center of the group Wanna One.
After Wanna One disbanded, Kang took a decisive turn toward independence. In 2019, he engaged in a legal battle with LM Entertainment after they sold his exclusive contract rights without his consent. A Seoul Central District Court ruled in his favor in May 2019, allowing him to establish Konnect Entertainment. Since then, he has navigated a successful solo career, releasing the 'color trilogy' (Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow), which saw him surpass one million cumulative album sales within just 13 months of his solo debut.
