A video game designed to be intentionally uncomfortable and unpleasing
In short: Most games strive to be immersive and polished. Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days deliberately aims for the opposite. Developed as an 'anti-game,' it uses jarring jump-cuts, shaky cam, and an oppressive atmosphere to force players to experience the psychological weight and grim consequences of urban violence.
Developed by IO Interactive and released in 2010, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days sought to create a postmodernist commentary on the nature of violence in media. Rather than providing a smooth, heroic experience, the team intentionally pursued an 'uncomfortable and tiresome' atmosphere. This was achieved through a visual style inspired by low-quality camcorder footage, documentary films, and hand-held cinematography. The game even features 'unprofessional' editing, including jarring jump-cuts and a camera that can fall over when the player dies.
The aesthetic choices were deeply rooted in the developers' desire to evoke specific emotions. Art director Rasmus Poulsen described the project as 'sad poetry' and 'vague poetry of urban loneliness,' focusing on themes of urban alienation and the realistic consequences of crime. To capture this, Poulsen traveled to Shanghai with a handheld camera to gather reference imagery. The musical score, described as 'industrial-horror,' was designed to create a sense of discomfort rather than just providing a background track, drawing influences from films like Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell.
This experimental approach was considered a significant risk during development, leading to internal pushback. However, the team remained committed to its vision of an 'anti-game' that prioritized atmosphere over traditional polish. While the game received mixed reviews—with some critics citing the shaky cam as nauseating—it remains a notable example of a commercial product attempting to function as a piece of 'half-art' commentary on the psychology of violence.
