On the Ganges, Cawnpore became Uttar Pradesh's giant
Kanpur, once named Kanhapur and anglicized as Cawnpore, is a Ganges city in Uttar Pradesh founded by Rajput ruler Hindu Singh Chandel. The 2011 census ranked it India's twelfth-most populous city and the state's largest urban agglomeration, with city-plus-suburbs then topping three million.
The city sits at about 26.45°N, 80.33°E in the Indo-Gangetic plains, averaging 318 metres elevation, roughly 484 kilometres southeast of New Delhi and 80 kilometres southwest of Lucknow. Early villages such as Patkapura, Kuraswam, Juhi, and Seesamau coalesced into a place traditionally credited to Raja Hindu Singh Chandel of Sachendi—named Kanhpur, perhaps from Kanhiyapur or the Kanhaiya Ashtam festival, though some link it to Karnapur and the Mahabharata hero Karna. Jajmau Ghat dates to the seventeenth century; other heritage landmarks include a local museum collection, an early brick shrine at Bhitargaon, a colonial burial ground, and Nanarao Park.
British interest sharpened after victory over Shuja-ud-Daula near Jajmau in May 1765. A military camp appeared by 1778 even while the town remained in Awadh; the 1801 treaty with Nawab Saadat Ali Khan transferred control. The East India Company pushed indigo along the Ganges; the Grand Trunk Road reached in 1832, with Lucknow and Kalpi links in 1864. Nineteenth-century Cawnpore held barracks for seven thousand soldiers and became a critical garrison until independence in 1947. In 1857 rebels under Nana Sahib besieged about nine hundred British men, women, and children for twenty-two days—an episode whose contested aftermath still shapes memorials—before British forces under General Neill retook the city on 18 July.
Kanpur Nagar district counted about 4.58 million people in the 2011 census, with 79.65 percent literacy and a sex ratio of 862; the city-plus-suburbs agglomeration was 3,015,645, then Uttar Pradesh's largest. Provisional 2023 projections put the district near 6.37 million; 2024 city and metro guesses run about 3.93 million and 5.1 million. Hindi and Urdu dominate; Punjabi speakers are about 1.25 percent, with over eleven thousand Bengali speakers. Annual rainfall typically falls between 865 and 900 millimetres, mostly from the southwest monsoon. The municipal corporation, upgraded from an 1861 municipality in 1959, covers 403 square kilometres and reported roughly ₹931 crore in revenue receipts against ₹805 crore spending in 2022–23.
