In short: Most professional footballers enter the pro ranks straight from academies, but Kaoru Mitoma took a different path. Feeling unprepared for the professional grind at 18, he chose university education over a senior contract, eventually writing a formal thesis on the mechanics of dribbling before becoming a Premier League sensation.

Born in Hita, Ōita, in 1997, Mitoma’s journey to the top was defined by academic rigor and strategic patience. Following his entry into the Kawasaki Frontale academy at U10, coach Yahiro Kazama invited him into the senior squad. However, observing the difficulties his peers faced in securing regular playing time, Mitoma opted to enroll at the University of Tsukuba instead. During his formative years, he relocated to the Kanagawa prefecture to live in Miyamae-ku. This move allowed him to join the Kawasaki Frontale youth system at the U10 level.

While majoring in physical education, Mitoma used his time at Tsukuba to master his craft, famously writing a university thesis dedicated to the art of dribbling. This academic approach coincided with high-level competition, where he was selected for Japan's under-23 national team for the 2017 and 2019 Universiade, the 2018 Asian Games, and the 2019 Toulon Tournament. His collegiate career also included playing in the Kanto University Soccer League. During his final three seasons there, he earned a spot in the all-league XI.

Since joining Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021, Mitoma has become a standout performer. He reached multiple landmarks, such as being the inaugural Japanese recipient of a Premier League monthly award (August 2023) and exceeding the single-season English top-flight goal totals of Shinji Okazaki and Shinji Kagawa for a Japanese player. Despite facing setbacks, such as a back injury in early 2024 and a hamstring injury in May 2026, his technical ability remains his hallmark. His impact in England was immediate, notably scoring a match-winning goal in the 2020 Emperor's Cup final. He has also been recognised as a multiple-time MVP by the Japan Pro-Footballers Association.
