In short: Kemerovo, an industrial city in the Kuznetsk Basin, is defined by its coal-rich history and heavy manufacturing. Yet, beyond its chemical plants and steel mills, this Russian city has quietly established itself as the premier infrastructure hub for bandy, a unique ice sport played with a ball.

Kemerovo sits at the confluence of the Iskitimka and Tom Rivers, evolving from a collection of seven 19th-century villages into a major administrative center. Its identity is inseparable from the coal discovered in the region in 1721. By 1918, the settlement of Shcheglovo was granted town status, later renamed Kemerovo in 1932. Throughout the Soviet era, the city became a powerhouse of steel, aluminum, and chemical production, though the post-Soviet period brought significant industrial decline and unemployment.

The city’s coat of arms reflects this heritage, featuring a cogwheel and a retort to symbolize its industrial roots, while the black field represents the region's primary wealth: coal. This industrial legacy is also marked by the monument to Mikhailo Volkov, the man credited with discovering the area's coal deposits. The city's resilience is tested by history, from the dark era of the Great Terror to more recent tragedies, including a 2018 shopping mall fire and a 2022 nursing home fire.

Despite its industrial grit, Kemerovo has cultivated a surprising cultural and sporting niche. It boasts the best infrastructure for bandy in Russia, including the country's first indoor arena specifically built for the sport. The local club, Kuzbass, draws massive crowds, with 26,000 spectators attending the 2011–12 league opener. The city’s commitment to the sport is so deep that it has even hosted the Bandy World Championship and pioneered efforts to develop female bandy, distinguishing itself as a unique cultural beacon in the Siberian landscape.
