In short: As a member of the telepathic Ocampa species, Kes lived for only nine years. Her short lifespan was a deliberate narrative device intended to challenge the audience's perception of time. While she began as a fragile, innocent figure, her journey eventually forced her to confront immense power and maturity.

Created by Rick Berman, Michael Piller, and Jeri Taylor, Kes was one of the original nine characters developed for Star Trek: Voyager. The producers nicknamed her the Mayfly, intending for her to age one year at the midpoint of each season to emphasize her fleeting existence. Her backstory was rooted in the Ocampa home world, an underground city where her people had become dependent on a being known as the Caretaker, who had accidentally destroyed their planet's atmosphere.

Kes joined the crew of the USS Voyager after being rescued from the Kazon by Neelix and Captain Kathryn Janeway. Onboard, she managed an aeroponics garden and served as a medical assistant to the Doctor, an artificial intelligence. Her storylines often explored her developing psychic abilities, which eventually grew so potent that they threatened the safety of the ship. In the fourth season, she departed the vessel, using her powers to propel the crew 10,000 light-years closer to Earth before transforming into living energy.

The character's development was complex and often debated. While she was a fan favorite during the show's initial run, critics frequently found her direction unclear or boring. Academics have since analyzed her through various lenses, including her representation of femininity, her relationship with Janeway, and her role as a 'native informant' who provided the crew with essential knowledge about the Delta Quadrant. Her departure, which occurred when actor Jennifer Lien was fired due to personal issues affecting her reliability, remains a significant point of discussion regarding the treatment of female performers in the franchise.
