In short: In 1946, a communist regime forcibly renamed KF Tirana to honor a military liberation. For a decade, the club was systematically stripped of its best talent to feed state-sponsored teams. Yet, they endured, eventually reclaiming their name and becoming Albania's most successful football club.

Founded on August 15, 1920, as Sportklub Tirona, KF Tirana is the cornerstone of Albanian football. The club established early dominance, winning three consecutive championships between 1930 and 1932. However, its history is marked by complex political interference. During the Italian invasion of 1939, the club won trophies under a fascist regime—titles that the Albanian Football Association officially refused to recognize in 2013, labeling them illegitimate. The most severe pressure came under the communist rule of Enver Hoxha. In 1946, the club was forced to become '17 Nëntori' to commemorate the liberation of Tirana. The regime then created 'privileged' teams, Partizani and Dinamo, which were backed by the Defense and Internal Affairs Ministries, respectively. These state-sponsored clubs were allowed to 'convince' Tirana's most talented players to switch sides against their will, leading to a period of struggle for the original club. Tirana eventually staged a comeback, reclaiming its pre-1947 name in 1991 and winning the championship again in the late 1960s. Today, the club stands as a titan of the sport, boasting 57 major domestic trophies and two stars on its crest—a feat achieved only after winning 20 league championships. Beyond domestic success, they hold a historical record for the highest-ranked Albanian club globally, reaching 31st in the world in 1987.
