In short: Spanning a staggering 780 square kilometers, King Fahd International Airport holds a Guinness World Record for size. Yet, much of this massive footprint is undeveloped desert. Located 31 kilometres northwest of Dammam, this hub serves the Eastern Province and manages complex logistics for both commercial and military interests.

The airport's immense scale is a point of significant distinction. While Guinness World Records cites its area at 780 square kilometers, an unofficial website suggests the utilized portion is much smaller, at approximately 36.75 square kilometers. This vast expanse was planned as part of a government-run Airports Development Program, with the site master plan completed in 1977 by Boeing and the architecture firm Yamasaki & Associates.

The facility's history is deeply intertwined with regional military operations. After basic infrastructure was completed in 1990, the airport served as a US airbase during the Gulf War in early 1991. During this period, it was used by US-led coalition forces to store military aircraft, including 144 A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, as well as AH-64 Apaches and CH-47 Chinooks from the 101st Airborne Division.

Today, the airport is the third largest in Saudi Arabia by passenger volume, handling around 9.7 million passengers annually. It operates three distinct terminals: a Passenger Terminal for mainstream travelers, a Royal Terminal for the Saudi royal family, and an Aramco Terminal used exclusively by employees of the state-owned oil giant, Saudi Aramco. While it serves as a hub for airlines like Flynas and Flyadeal, it also facilitates strategic employee transport for Saudi Aramco Aviation to locations like Yanbu, Tanajib, and Shaybah.

The airport's commercial era began on 28 November 1999, after transferring operations from the now military-designated King Abdulaziz Air Base (formerly Dhahran International Airport). Since July 2017, it has been managed by the Dammam Airports Company (DACO) as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 and National Transformation Program.
