Cabanatuan is the Philippines' tricycle capital and a vital economic hub for Nueva Ecija
In short: Known as the Gateway to the North, this Philippine city serves as a major commercial and transportation center. Home to over 30,000 motorized tricycles, it anchors the economy of Nueva Ecija, drawing a massive daily commuter population that swells the city's size to nearly one million people.
Cabanatuan, located in the central plains of Luzon, has evolved from its 1750 founding as a barrio of Gapan into a bustling urban center. Its strategic position along the Pan-Philippine Highway has cemented its role as a regional hub for education, medicine, and trade. The city's economic significance is underscored by its financial sector; as of June 2018, its 65 banks held approximately 43 billion pesos in deposit liabilities, representing over half of the province's total deposits.
The city's history is marked by periods of both administrative prominence and wartime trauma. It served as the capital of the First Philippine Republic during President Emilio Aguinaldo's retreat and was later the site of a notorious Japanese prison camp during World War II. In January 1945, U.S. Army Rangers and Alamo Scouts executed a daring 30-mile march behind enemy lines to liberate 500 prisoners of war. Today, the site is honored by the Cabanatuan American Memorial, which has been maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission since 1989.
Modern Cabanatuan faces the challenges of rapid urbanization and environmental vulnerability. It is frequently exposed to natural hazards, including typhoons and earthquakes, such as the 7.8 magnitude tremor in 1990 that caused significant loss of life. Despite these risks, the city continues to attract major real estate developers and is currently partnering with the Korea Agricultural Machinery Industry Cooperative to establish the nation's first agri-machinery manufacturing complex. This project, launched in October 2024, aims to leverage the city's status as a trading center for agricultural produce to drive long-term industrial growth.
