Why a former zookeeper adopted the persona of a medieval king to survive
In short: In a post-apocalyptic world defined by brutality, one leader chose a different path. By adopting the mannerisms of a benevolent feudal monarch, a former zookeeper named Ezekiel inspired his community to thrive. His theatrical persona was not mere vanity, but a calculated strategy to foster hope and unity.
Ezekiel, a former zookeeper and amateur stage actor, founded a community known as The Kingdom after the walker outbreak. Recognizing that his people needed more than just survival, he cultivated the persona of King Ezekiel, complete with a quasi-Shakespearean tone and a court of advisers. This performance was designed to inspire his community, providing a sense of order and dignity that contrasted sharply with the surrounding chaos. His leadership was defined by consent rather than coercion, and he was supported by a loyal pet Bengal tiger named Shiva, whom he had rescued from an exhibit as a cub.
The Kingdom eventually became a thriving, lush sanctuary, but its peace was threatened by the Saviors, a vicious group that demanded tribute from neighboring communities. Ezekiel initially sought to avoid open conflict to protect his people, but the murder of his young protégé Benjamin by the Saviors forced him into an all-out war. During this period, Ezekiel faced immense personal loss, including the death of his tiger, the collapse of his community, and a diagnosis of thyroid cancer—a condition that had affected his father and grandmother. He initially viewed his cancer as terminal, believing the world lacked the medical infrastructure for treatment.
Ezekiel's trajectory shifted when he gained access to the Commonwealth, a larger society with functional medical facilities. After undergoing surgery performed by a former thoracic surgeon, he successfully recovered. His experiences with class inequality within the Commonwealth led him to open a clinic for the disadvantaged and eventually participate in a revolution against the ruling regime. By the end of his journey, Ezekiel transitioned from a theatrical leader of a small, fallen community to the Governor of the Commonwealth, having moved past his personal bitterness toward his former enemies to focus on rebuilding a stable society.
