In short: In 2002, Leicester City moved into a brand-new home, only to spiral into receivership shortly after. This is the story of a £37 million arena that survived debt, ownership changes, and a tragic loss to become a symbol of sporting triumph.

The King Power Stadium, originally opened in 2002 as the Walkers Stadium, was built for between £35 million and £37 million. While the facility was designed by The Miller Partnership to be a 'flagship development' for Leicester, the move was immediately met with financial catastrophe. The combination of relegation from the Premiership, the collapse of ITV Digital, and a shrinking transfer market pushed the club into receivership almost as soon as the doors opened.

The financial strain was so severe that the club could not pay the full construction fee to Birse Construction. This loss was significant enough that the firm withdrew from future football ground construction projects. The stadium's ownership even reverted to TIAA–CREF, an American academic retirement fund, which had provided £28 million via a bond scheme. It was not until 2013 that the stadium was purchased by the club's owners, King Power, for £17 million.

Beyond the balance sheets, the stadium has been a site of immense historical weight. It hosted the legendary 2016 Premier League title-winning campaign and saw international stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaká compete in 2011. However, the ground also holds a somber place in club history; in October 2018, a helicopter crash in the stadium car park claimed the life of chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. Today, the stadium continues to evolve, with recent approvals for expansion and the installation of safe standing rails to accommodate a growing legacy.
