In short: Founded to commemorate a 1905 royal visit, King George's Medical University has undergone a complex evolution. From its 1911 inaugural session to frequent name changes driven by shifting state governments, this institution in Lucknow reflects the political currents of Uttar Pradesh through its very identity.

The origins of the institution trace back to the initiative of Raja Sir Tassaduq Rasul Khan of Jahangirabad Raj. It was established to commemorate King George V's 1905 visit to India. In 1906, the King personally laid the foundation stone, with building finishing in 1913 for ₹30 lakhs. Academic studies began in October 1911, leading to the initial group of doctors graduating in 1916.

The university's identity has been subject to significant political shifts. The Uttar Pradesh Government, under Mayawati (BSP), bestowed university status in 2002, rebranding it Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University (CSMMU). However, following a change in leadership to Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party in August 2003, the name was changed back to King George's Medical University (KGMU) in October 2003. This cycle repeated in 2007 when Mayawati returned to office, reverting the name to CSMMU, before Akhilesh Yadav's government restored the KGMU name in 2012.

Today, the university is a significant medical hub in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. It is the only government medical institution in the state to hold a NAAC A++ grade. The institution supports approximately 1,250 undergraduate students, including 280 dental students, and about 450 postgraduate students. It has produced a distinguished alumni base, including 45 BC Roy awardees and one Padma Vibhushan recipient.

The institution's complexity extends to its dental faculty, which was established as an ENT section in 1949. It has experienced its own series of status changes and name revisions, mirroring the broader university's administrative shifts between being a constituent college and a separate state university.
