The massive military machine that mobilizes nearly one-third of North Korea
In short: As the world's second-largest military organization, the Korean People's Army is more than just a defense force. With roughly 29.9% of the population serving or in reserve, it functions as a massive social and economic engine, operating its own farms, factories, and trading arms.
The Korean People's Army (KPA) is the integrated military arm of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK). While its primary adversaries remain the United States Forces Korea and the Republic of Korea Armed Forces, the KPA's structure is deeply intertwined with the state's political hierarchy. Under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, the force is commanded by the WPK Central Military Commission and the president of the State Affairs.
The KPA's history is a complex tapestry of shifting dates and political narratives. For a period, North Korean historiography claimed the army's origins dated back to 1932, rooted in Kim Il Sung's anti-Japanese guerrilla activities. However, by 2019, the official establishment date was reverted to February 8, 1948, the same period when the military was formally organized and the Ministry of Defence was established.
The force has undergone significant structural transformations to ensure party dominance. Recent years have seen a move away from 'military-first' policies toward 'people-first' politics, with the 8th WPK Congress in 2021 actually reducing the number of military delegates. This shift aims to consolidate WPK control, ensuring the military remains an 'army of the party' rather than an independent power center.
Beyond combat, the KPA's reach extends into civilian life through conscription and paramilitary structures. Males face a 10-year conscription period, while females serve until age 23. The organization also maintains the Red Youth Guards, a cadet corps for students, and the Korean People's Social Security Forces, which acts as a national gendarmerie for civil defense and traffic management.
