This vast Siberian region holds the keys to Russia's industrial and energy future
In short: Spanning over two million square kilometers, Krasnoyarsk Krai is a colossal Russian territory that acts as a powerhouse for natural resources. From its massive hydroelectric dams to its dominance in global platinum and nickel production, this region remains a critical, often overlooked, engine of the Russian economy.
Krasnoyarsk Krai is the largest krai in Russia and the third-largest country subdivision globally, covering 2,366,797 square kilometers. Stretching 3,000 kilometers from the Sayan Mountains to the Arctic Ocean, it occupies nearly half of the Siberian Federal District. Its geography is defined by the Yenisei River basin, which hosts some of the world's most powerful hydroelectric plants, including the Sajano-Schuschensk and Krasnoyarsk reservoirs. These facilities provide the massive energy output necessary to sustain the region's energy-intensive industries, such as aluminum production.
The region is a geological treasure trove, supplying 95% of Russia's platinum and platinoids, 80% of its nickel, and 75% of its cobalt. Beyond its industrial capacity, the krai has a complex history. It served as a site of exile for political figures like Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin and housed numerous Gulag camps during the Soviet era. The territory also witnessed the 1908 Tunguska event, a massive explosion in the Podkamennaya Tunguska basin estimated at 10–15 megatons, which flattened over 2,000 square kilometers of forest.
Today, the krai is governed by a Legislative Assembly of 52 deputies and a governor. The region's administrative structure has evolved significantly, notably through the 2007 merger of the Taymyr and Evenk Autonomous Okrugs into the krai. While the north remains a harsh, sparsely populated arctic landscape, over 95% of the population and industrial activity are concentrated in the south. This divide highlights the krai's dual nature: a rugged, frozen frontier and a vital industrial hub that remains essential to the nation's economic infrastructure.
