In short: Spanning from the Don Steppe to the Mediterranean-like Black Sea coast, Krasnodar Krai is a vital Russian federal subject. Home to over 5.8 million people, this region—historically known as Kuban—balances industrial power, major port infrastructure, and a rich, often contested, cultural heritage shaped by centuries of shifting empires.

Krasnodar Krai, situated in Southern Russia, is a region of striking environmental and historical contrasts. Its northern plains are part of the Don Steppe, while its southern reaches feature a Mediterranean climate shielded by the Caucasus Mountains. This geography has made it a significant hub for both agriculture and tourism, with Sochi hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics and Novorossiysk serving as a critical Black Sea port. The region is also defined by the Kuban River, which bisects the territory and provides its informal name.

The area's history is a layered narrative of migration and conquest. Once inhabited by the Maiōtai, the region saw the arrival of Pontic Greeks in the 6th century BC, followed by the Khazars, Kievan Rus', and the Golden Horde. In the late 18th century, Catherine II annexed the territory, leading to the settlement of Black Sea Cossacks. This history of identity is particularly complex regarding the Kuban Cossacks, who were historically considered ethnic Ukrainians but are now largely identified as ethnic Russians due to centuries of assimilation and political pressure.

Modern governance in the krai is dictated by its Charter, with a legislative assembly and a governor overseeing thirty-eight districts. The region remains an economic powerhouse, exporting refined petroleum, wheat, and iron. However, it is also vulnerable to natural disasters; in 2012, catastrophic flooding in Krymsk resulted in at least 171 deaths. Despite these challenges, the krai remains a central pillar of Russia's Southern Federal District, serving as a strategic link between the Caucasus, the Black Sea, and the contested Crimean Peninsula via the Kerch Strait bridge.
