The Malaysian airport that exports more value than any other in the nation
In short: While most travelers focus on passenger numbers, Penang International Airport holds a different title. It handles the highest export value of any Malaysian airport, processing RM365 billion in goods in 2023 alone. But this vital logistics hub was once just a collection of concrete runways built atop coastal mudflats.
Completed in 1935 under the British administration of the Straits Settlements, the airport—originally known as Bayan Lepas International Airport—was a significant engineering feat. Because the site was constructed on mudflats, engineers had to install concrete runways to ensure the facility could remain operational in all weather conditions. At the time, while Singapore's Kallang airport was considered the premier facility in the region, Bayan Lepas served as a strategic secondary hub with superior proximity to East Asia and Indochina.
The airport's history is marked by rapid expansion and political tension. Following Malaya's independence, a 1967 federal allocation of $2.3 million (in Malaya and British Borneo dollars) funded an expansion in the 1970s. This project included a terminal featuring Minangkabau architecture and a runway lengthened to accommodate the Boeing 747. By 1979, the facility was officially renamed Penang International Airport. Despite various proposals to move the airport to Seberang Perai or Kedah, the site was maintained due to its critical role in the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone.
Today, the airport is a massive economic engine. In 2023, it recorded the highest export value in the country, reaching RM365 billion. While it ranks third in Malaysia by aircraft movements, it is a powerhouse for cargo, handling the second largest tonnage in the nation. Looking forward, a RM1.5 billion expansion is underway to increase passenger capacity to 12 million by 2028. New facilities, featuring the inaugural Mitsui outlet mall beyond the Klang Valley, are part of this scheme and shall later connect to the Mutiara light rail, slated for a 2031 finish.
