A cinematic romance caught between religious tension and a natural disaster
In short: When the 2013 Uttarakhand floods devastated the mountains, they provided the backdrop for a controversial Indian film. This inter-faith love story survived legal battles, production disputes, and intense religious protests to reach the screen, ultimately testing its protagonists against the elements.
Released on 7 December 2018, the film Kedarnath, directed by Abhishek Kapoor, follows the relationship between Mansoor Khan, a Muslim porter, and Mandakini 'Mukku' Mishra, the daughter of a Hindu priest. Set against the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, the narrative explores how the couple survives the sudden rains and the destruction of the valley around the historic Kedarnath Temple.
The production was marked by significant turbulence. In February 2018, a lawsuit between Kapoor and the original producers, KriArj Entertainment, threatened the film's completion. Eventually, Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies took over production. The legal dispute even impacted lead actress Sara Ali Khan's schedule, leading to a court case regarding her simultaneous filming of the movie Simmba.
Upon its release, the film faced intense scrutiny. Some religious groups and lawyers filed complaints, alleging the film promoted 'love jihad' or insulted Hindu sentiments. However, the Bombay High Court dismissed these pleas on 6 December 2018, allowing the release. Another lawsuit filed by Prakash Rajput, which claimed the film was inappropriate for families, was also dismissed by the High Court of Gujarat, which labeled the complaint a 'publicity stunt'.
Critics offered mixed reviews. While many praised the debut performances of Sara Ali Khan and the supporting work of Sushant Singh Rajput, others criticized the screenplay and predictable plot. Despite these critiques, the film achieved moderate commercial success, noted for its visual scale and the emotional weight of its disaster-driven climax.
