The Roman fort that shaped a city's long and complex history
In short: From a 1st-century Roman garrison to a notorious "Hanging Town," Lancaster’s identity is etched into its landscape. Built on the site of an ancient fort, the city has transitioned from a vital maritime hub and center of the slave trade to a modern service-oriented economy.
The foundations of Lancaster lie in its Roman past. On the site of the current Lancaster Castle, a fort was likely founded during the 60s CE. While coin evidence suggests the site was not continuously inhabited in its earliest years, it was rebuilt in stone around 102 CE. This 4th-century fortification was a significant structure, featuring a massive curtain-wall and projecting bastions—a design typical of the Saxon Shore or Wales and unique to north-west Britain.
The city's name itself is a linguistic relic, recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as 'Loncastre.' The prefix 'Lon' refers to the River Lune, while 'castre' is derived from the Old English 'cæster' or Latin 'castrum,' both meaning fort. This connection to its military origins persisted through the centuries, with the castle serving as a site for the Lancaster Assizes. The court was so prolific in its sentencing that Lancaster earned the nickname "the Hanging Town," as it reportedly sentenced more people to be hanged than any other location in the country outside of London.
Lancaster's economic trajectory was heavily influenced by its relationship with the sea. The Port of Lancaster turned into a major UK hub during the 1700s, serving as the nation's fourth largest centre for the slave trade. However, as the River Lune began to silt up, the city's maritime dominance waned, eventually giving way to a modern economy focused on services, high-tech sectors, and tourism.
