From Roman fort to industrial powerhouse, how Leicester became one of England's oldest cities
In short: Leicester is a city of deep historical layers, evolving from an Iron Age settlement into a Roman tribal capital and a medieval royal stronghold. Today, it stands as a diverse, modern urban centre, consistently ranked among the best places to live and work in the East Midlands of England.
The story of Leicester begins over two millennia ago. Originally an Iron Age oppidum, the site was transformed by the Romans around AD 47 into Ratae Corieltauvorum, a tribal capital featuring a forum and bathhouse. Following the Roman withdrawal, the city endured through Saxon and Viking occupations, eventually becoming one of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw. By the medieval period, it had become a significant political hub, hosting parliaments in 1318, 1414, and 1450, and serving as a royal residence for the House of Lancaster.
The city's industrial identity was forged in the Victorian era, when it became a major centre for hosiery and shoe manufacturing. This period of rapid expansion saw the population soar from 68,100 in 1861 to 211,600 by 1901. Leicester's economic resilience was notable; in 1936, the League of Nations identified it as the second-richest city in Europe, a status that helped it weather the Great Depression and attract refugees from across the continent.
Leicester’s modern character is defined by its ability to reinvent itself. After the decline of traditional manufacturing in the late 20th century, the city transitioned into a service and distribution hub. It has also become a site of significant archaeological discovery, most notably the 2012 unearthing of King Richard III in a car park, leading to his 2015 reburial in Leicester Cathedral. Today, the city is a diverse, unitary authority with a 2024 population of 388,348, continuing a long history of adaptation and growth.
