In short: Lanzarote, a Spanish island born from the Canary hotspot 15 million years ago, is a masterclass in adaptation. From ingenious viticulture techniques that harvest dew to the evolution of endemic species in volcanic tubes, this arid, ochre-hued landscape has forced both nature and humanity to innovate for survival.

Emerging from the Atlantic roughly 15 million years ago, Lanzarote is the easternmost of the Canary Islands. Its dramatic topography, defined by the Famara massif and the volcanic Timanfaya National Park, was fundamentally reshaped by a series of eruptions between 1730 and 1736. These events buried a quarter of the island in lava, destroying fertile soil and forcing a mass migration that eventually saw Lanzaroteans help settle San Antonio de Bexar in Texas.

The island's climate is classified as a subtropical hot desert, where rainfall is scarce and summer precipitation is virtually non-existent. To thrive in this environment, local farmers developed a unique agricultural method in the La Gería region. Vines are planted in deep, stone-walled pits that capture overnight dew and protect the plants from harsh winds. This ingenuity extends to the island's wildlife, which includes endemic species like the blind Munidopsis polymorpha crab, found in the volcanic Jameos del Agua salt lake.

Human history on the island is equally marked by struggle and transformation. Originally settled by the Majos tribe, the island was later conquered by French and Castilian forces in the 15th century, leading to the near-extinction of the indigenous population through slavery and conflict. Today, Lanzarote is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, though its status has faced scrutiny due to local corruption scandals involving illegal coastal development. Despite these challenges, the island remains a distinct cultural and ecological entity, home to over 163,000 residents and a diverse population of international origins.
